Medulloblastomas are a group of rare brain tumors of childhood. Surgery is the mainstay of treatment, but is frequently associated with neurocognitive deficits. Two photon beams are available for such treatment, each with advantages and disadvantages. Carbon ion beams are used mainly in Europe, while megavoltage photons are used in North America. The goal of this study was to evaluate the use of a nanosecond pulsed photon beam for the treatment of medulloblastoma. Pulsed photon beams are different from conventional high-energy photon beams due to their small field size and its lack of a sharp Bragg peak. In a parallel, non-randomized phase I/II trial, patients with newly diagnosed or recurrent medulloblastoma (n=23) were treated with a pulsed photon beam and followed until death or last follow-up.
